In Partnership with Nature
All fabrics are naturally dyed and botanically printed using various natural resources such as plants, invertebrates, minerals, and metals. I prioritize creating beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind dyed textiles using safe practices without synthetic dyes or toxic chemicals. I only use cellulose and protein fabrics: silk, wool, cotton, and linen. Plants and dye baths are primarily sourced from my organic dye garden or foraged locally.
My name is Angela Wardlaw. I grew up in the misty forests of the northwest and spent my childhood connected to the nature around me. My ingrained love of plant life started long ago. I have since rediscovered the joy of working with the properties of plants through experimenting and making mistakes in my natural dyeing. I am grateful I still have much to learn. Today I live in sunny Northern California, which has allowed me to have a year-round dye garden.
I experience natural dyeing as a slow, intentional art on cloth that results in us seeing the earth's beauty in a different form. I continue to learn as I experiment with the variables that go into creating a unique print on fabric. Every time I discover a new technique, I am shown many more paths to follow. I love the chemistry and precision used in the dyeing process, the interactions between the tannins in the plants, heat, and the mordanted cloth—the carefully followed steps in producing a unique and still unpredictable piece of art. In every project, I am motivated to find the balance between what I can do to alter an outcome and what nature presents.
I want to provide beautiful, naturally dyed pieces and continue learning.
